First Forum

The first Echonet Forum was held on August 5, 1998, at the TEPIA Hall in Tokyo. A total of 141 representatives from 58 member companies attended.

The forum opened with a speech by Chairman Reiji Sano and lasted from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Issues discussed included a summary of system architecture and how standardization would be approached. Following the meeting, members moved to another venue where they listened to a short speech from Makoto Nakagawa, an Echonet Director, and a congratulatory address by Atsuo Hirai, a member of the Industrial Electronics Division of MITI's Machinery and Information Industries Bureau, and enjoyed a buffet-style party.


1. History of the Echonet Consortium
An explanation of the current home networking environment was provided, and the need for a next-generation home network system capable of responding to society's future needs explained. A history of the Echonet Consortium, whose aim is to develop and standardize such a system, was also presented.

The Echonet development scope and policy were explained. A typical system configuration was presented, and the overall system architecture, including software, explained.

3. Profile of Standardization Items and Policy
Specific items for which the Consortium will develop specifications were presented along with an explanation of their positioning and the aims and methods of standardization. In addition, a proposal for the structure of the specifications was presented.

4. Echonet System Modeling
As part of the Echonet project, middleware will be developed to facilitate the development of applications. This middleware will use object expressions. A summary of the modeling process and the benefits of using such a process were explained.
